Surprise Based Learning for Protecting your AI Solutions from Unintended Behavior

Co-sponsored by: GTRI - Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) In this talk, I will introduce Surprise Based Learning (SBL), a novel machine learning algorithm founded on the concepts of Complementary Discrimination Learning first introduced by Dr. Wei-Min Shen and Nobel laureate professor Herbert Simon in 1989. In contrast to most competitive learning algorithms which focus on structured learning (e.g., Bayesian Networks, Hidden Markov Models) or parameter learning (e.g., Neural Networks, Deep Learning) SBL offers the best of both worlds, meaning…

Non-Stationary Mobile-to-Mobile Channels: Algebraic Analysis

October 1 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Co-sponsored by: Prof. Alenka Zajic Recent measurements for mobile-to-mobile channels have revealed that channels with a moving transmitter and receiver exhibit a non-stationary behavior. Therefore the widely used WSSUS models have only limited validity in that case. In this presentation, it is explained how geometric-stochastic channel modeling makes it possible to incorporate the non-stationarity into a mobile-to-mobile channel model. The geometry naturally includes the non-stationarity, whereas the stochastic part makes the model applicable to many different scenarios. Speaker(s): Dr. Michael…

IEEE Atlanta PES Lunch Meeting: “Cybersecurity and Electric Energy Delivery Systems”

October 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Program:  "Cybersecurity and Electric Energy Delivery Systems" will describe results of the Cyber-Physical Modeling and Simulation for Situational Awareness (CYMSA) project. This US DoE funded program combines a novel faster-than-real-time distributed electric energy network simulator with unique situational awareness technologies to provide network operators with results of assessments of substation-level command and control traffic. Deep packet inspection is used to parse DNP3 messages captured directly in substation networks.  The content of these messages in presented to the network simulator which…

Chaotic Detector to Identify Weak Signals in the Presence of Gaussian Noise

October 11 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

IEEE Atlanta Communications Society Chapter presents: Dr. John Shields of GTRI who will be giving a brief talk on Chaotic Detectors. Please register at https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/177203.   Brief Summary of the talk: The detection of very weak signals in the presence of background noise is a challenge of significantinterest for many radar, sonar, and communications applications. Standard tools such as the MatchedFilter perform poorly when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is less than about -10 or -20 dB. Therefore, the detection of these low SNR…
