Industrial Strength Particle Flow Filters for Maneuvering Targets

March 29 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

We show some applications of particle filters for prediction of maneuvering targets using the correct (nonlinear) physical models. We use a new exact stochastic particle flow filter, using a theorem of Gromov. Our filter is many orders of magnitude faster than standard particle filters for high dimensional problems, and our filter beats the extended Kalman filter accuracy by orders of magnitude for difficult nonlinear problems. Our theory uses particle flow to compute Bayes’ rule, rather than a pointwise multiply. We…

Challenges to the Bulk Power System

April 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Program:  Integration of Large Amounts of Inverter-Based Resources The increasing penetration of inverter-based resources, including renewable energy resources, is creating new challenges in planning and operating the bulk power system (BPS). Recent system disturbances in California and Australia highlights this issue. Inverter based resources behave very differently compared to traditional synchronous machine based generation during system disturbances. It is important to understand limitations and capabilities of inverter based resources and their impact on reliability of the bulk power system. This…

Discharge Channel Erosion in the Hall Effect Thruster

April 19 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Electric propulsion devices are rapidly replacing traditional chemical rockets on government and commercial spacecraft.  Electric propulsion devices possess a combination of high specific impulse and high thrust efficiency that drastically reduce the mass of propellant required to perform a specific mission.  Satellite operators leverage these characteristics to reduce the mass and related size of a spacecraft while maintaining its payload capability.  Thus, the same on-orbit capability is achieved at a signicantly lower launch cost.  Concurrently, NASA uses electric propulsion to…

IEEE PELS Atlanta: Energizing and Powering Microsystems

April 19 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Co-sponsored by: Adolfo Ponce de Leon Networked wireless microsensors can not only monitor and manage power consumption in small-and large-scale applications for space, military, medical, agricultural, and consumer markets but also add cost-, energy-, and life-saving intelligence to large infrastructures and tiny devices in remote and difficult-to-reach places.  Ultra-small systems, however, cannot store sufficient energy to sustain monitoring, interface, processing, and telemetry functions for long.  And replacing or recharging the batteries of hundreds of networked nodes can be labor intensive, expensive, and…

IEEE PES Atlanta – May 2018 Luncheon Meeting

May 8 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Topic: Transmission connected wind and solar plants are increasingly connecting to weak AC network locations because of the remote location of these resources and the increasing retirement of large thermal power plants. Weak AC networks pose a challenge because of reduced power transfer capacity of the transmission system and, in the case of power-electronic based generators, risks of control instabilities or unstable control interactions between plants.  In this presentation, recent experience with these weak-system challenges is described and an example…

Human-Guided Statistical Relational Learning

Recently there has been an increased interest in intelligent systems that effectively utilize human feedback. Traditional machine learners are reliant on a large amount of ideal training data. However, it is vital that learning systems working on complex, real-world tasks make use of expert knowledge to complement available data. Many intelligent systems require that the expert understand machine learning in order to provide useful knowledge. This talk will give an overview of relational learning techniques and then describe approaches that…
