Advanced Sensor Concepts, Exploitation, Signal Processing and Systems Engineering

August 2, 2017 @ 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

In this talk, a number of concepts and technologies forming the foundation for the exploitation of sensors from a Big Data perspective are presented. A signal processing and systems engineering approach is discussed, and heuristic techniques are presented as being critical to leap ahead advances in sensor exploitation. While radar centric in nature, the foundation for a more general sensors approach to Big Data exploitation is discussed. Archival data is considered to be essential to the optimal exploitation of sensor…

Industrial Strength Particle Flow Filters for Maneuvering Targets

March 29, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

We show some applications of particle filters for prediction of maneuvering targets using the correct (nonlinear) physical models. We use a new exact stochastic particle flow filter, using a theorem of Gromov. Our filter is many orders of magnitude faster than standard particle filters for high dimensional problems, and our filter beats the extended Kalman filter accuracy by orders of magnitude for difficult nonlinear problems. Our theory uses particle flow to compute Bayes’ rule, rather than a pointwise multiply. We…

Discharge Channel Erosion in the Hall Effect Thruster

April 19, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Electric propulsion devices are rapidly replacing traditional chemical rockets on government and commercial spacecraft.  Electric propulsion devices possess a combination of high specific impulse and high thrust efficiency that drastically reduce the mass of propellant required to perform a specific mission.  Satellite operators leverage these characteristics to reduce the mass and related size of a spacecraft while maintaining its payload capability.  Thus, the same on-orbit capability is achieved at a signicantly lower launch cost.  Concurrently, NASA uses electric propulsion to…

Applications of Frequency Combs over the Air in Timing and Spectroscopy

October 23, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Optical frequency combs bring new capabilities in precision laser measurements. At its simplest level, a frequency comb provides an optical spectrum comprised of a series of equally-spaced spectral lines at precisely known optical frequencies, and is often referred to as an "optical frequency ruler". While their initial application was to optical metrology and specifically to support optical clocks, frequency combs are being applied to a growing number of applications. I will briefly discuss frequency combs before describing two applications that…

“DER/DG/MICROGRID OPERATION, CONTROL & PROTECTION”

October 24, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Abstract: This technical session provides a background into Distributed Energy Resource (DER) operation and associated protection and control considerations for conventional and inverter-based power sources.  We will review types of DER/DG and the modes in which they can operate in parallel with the distribution system.  Key aspects of IEEE 1547 and a sample DER interconnection screening process are highlighted.  Details of on-site standby power system conversion to operate in parallel with the distribution system are shown.  Protection methodology at the…
