IEEE Atlanta PES Lunch Meeting: “Grid 2.0 – Changes and Challenges for the 21st Century Electric Grid”
January 16 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
“Generally speaking, keeping up with the speed of technological advancement has not been a major challenge for those responsible for the electric grid – until now. Utilities’ historical maintenance-focused approach of ‘If it ain’t broke it, don’t fix it’ no longer applies. The unique challenges of the 21st century – including cyber threats and global interconnectedness, coupled with an extreme interdependence on technology – necessitate that the Grid change at a faster pace than ever before. This story will take you through a brief history of the electric grid, then dive into the new trends that are being embraced by the grid today – electric vehicles, distributed generation/distributed energy resources, and battery energy storage systems. There have been significant technological innovations, and some of the more recent cutting-edge research will be presented. There will be a brief overview of the challenges to the grid as a result of these changes, discussing such technical topics as: system protection, system stability, and cybersecurity. Ultimately, the talk will lead to the Grid of Tomorrow and what we can expect in a Grid 2.0.”
